Introducing Balor Defense
Our event-based vision and edge-autonomy work is now a dedicated product line focused on seeker and guidance solutions for counter-UAS interceptors, small arms and point defense.
Balor Defense is now a dedicated product line for event-based seeker payloads and edge-AI guidance.
The capability is not new. It has been developed across multiple SBIR programs for the Navy, the Army and USSOCOM, covering event-based imaging, edge inference, sensor fusion and autonomous sensing. What is new is the packaging: that work now sits under its own name, aimed at a specific set of customers.
Why a separate line
Research programs produce capability. They do not, on their own, produce something a program office can buy, an integrator can drop into an airframe, or a prime can put on a bill of materials. Keeping this work under a general robotics R&D banner made it harder for exactly the people who need it to find it.
Balor Defense addresses three application domains:
- Counter-UAS interceptors — terminal seeking against Group 1–3 UAS
- Small arms fire control — aided aim and lead-angle computation
- Point defense — cueing, track custody and effector handoff for close-in layers
What the line covers
The scope runs from the sensor head through to the command interface: event-based and dual-modality sensor payloads, the edge autonomy stack that turns a sparse event stream into a trustworthy track, and the estimation and guidance layer that turns that track into a usable command.
It also covers the way most of this reaches the field — contract R&D and SBIR execution, either as principal investigator or as subcontracted scope inside a larger program.
Validated in the field
In May 2026 we ran Balor from a U.S. Navy vessel underway at ONR’s Wave Breaker exercise in Key West — small-UAS detection and on-the-move tracking from a moving deck against a moving background. That puts the platform at TRL 5/6.
